Match a suit, match a rank, play an eight and change the game. The first to empty their hand wins.
How this Crazy Eights works
Play against one, two or three computer players. In a two-player game everyone gets seven cards, and in larger games five. On your turn, play a card that matches the suit or the rank of the top discard. Eights are wild: play one and you choose the next suit. If you can't play, draw from the stock until you can, or up to three cards if you choose that setting. The first to empty their hand wins the round and scores points from the cards the others still hold: an eight is 50, face cards are 10 and the rest are their number. Play to 100 or 200.
Playable cards glow, the current suit is shown clearly, and the draw is animated. It plays on a phone with a tap.
An old family of games
Crazy Eights belongs to the shedding family of card games, where the aim is to get rid of your cards first. Several modern commercial games trace their ancestry to it.
Tips
- Hold your eights. They are your escape when nothing else plays, so use them late.
- Change suit with a matching rank. Play a seven of the right rank to pivot into the suit you hold most of.
- Notice what the computer can't play. If it keeps drawing, steer the suit to one it lacks.
- Dump high cards first. The ones left in your hand cost points when someone else goes out.
House rules families add
The basic game is simple, so many families layer on action cards. Common ones: a queen skips the next player, a two makes the next player draw two, an ace reverses direction. This version sticks to the classic rules, with the draw limit as a setting, but it's easy to see how any of these would fit. If you play at the table with friends after a few online rounds, agree the house rules before you deal, because arguments over a skipped turn have ended friendships.
Playing with children
Crazy Eights is an easy step up from Go Fish. Matching a suit or a rank teaches children to look at two things at once, and the wild eight gives them a thrill when they get to choose the suit. Let the computer players run at a gentle pace, point out the glowing legal cards when a child is stuck, and celebrate the moment they save an eight for the perfect time.
