Play Klondike solitaire online, free

The solitaire most people mean when they say "solitaire": seven piles, one deck and four foundations to fill from ace to king.

How this Klondike works

Seven tableau piles are dealt with one card in the first, two in the second and so on, with only the top card of each face up. Turn cards from the stock into the waste, build the tableau downwards in alternating colours, and move cards up to the four foundations by suit from ace to king. Only a king, or a run starting with a king, can fill an empty pile. Clear every card onto the foundations to win.

You can draw one card at a time for an easier game or three at a time for a tougher one. Drag cards, or tap a card and then tap where it should go, and double-tap a card to send it straight to its foundation. Undo has no limit, a hint button points at a useful move, and a counter and timer track your effort. The game saves your wins and best time on your device. When you win, the cards bounce.

A short history

Patience and solitaire games date back to the eighteenth century in northern Europe. The Klondike version is commonly linked to the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s. It became the world's default solitaire in 1990, when a desktop operating system began shipping a version of it, and a generation learned the rules by clicking on it during lunch breaks.

Tips that win more games

  1. Uncover the biggest piles first. The more face-down cards in a pile, the more it's hiding.
  2. Think before you empty a column. Only a king can fill it, so don't clear one unless a king is ready.
  3. Move aces up straight away, but be careful with twos. A low card on the foundation can lock away a card you need as a tableau bridge.
  4. Don't cycle the stock for no reason. Look at everything that's available before you turn a card.
  5. Use undo to explore. It exists so you can try a line and come back.

Can every deal be won?

No. Researchers who have solved huge numbers of Klondike deals estimate that roughly four in five can be won with perfect play when you draw one card at a time. Most people win far fewer, mainly by moving too fast. Draw three is harder on both counts.
